Short Biography: Dr. Michael Davy currently holds the position of Associate Software Engineer at Morgan Stanley UK Ltd. Michael was awarded a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin in 2008 through his work with Dr. Saturnino Luz in the area of Artificial Intelligence. This research was funded through the embark initiative scholarship from the Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology. In 2004 Michael was awarded a M.Sc. in Computer Science (Networks and Distributed Systems) from Trinity College Dublin. Michael pursued his undergraduate studies at Dublin City University, where he was awarded a B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Applications (Software Engineering) in 2003. Michael's thesis investigated History-Based query selection strategies for Active Learning. He developed novel and practical query selection algorithms that leveraged information from classification predictions given in prior iterations of active learning. Other contributions in this work included unsupervised dimensionality reduction techniques for text data in an active learning setting. The research also examined a reinforcement learning technique to dynamically switch among a number of alternative query selection strategies at run-time, based on their relative performance. After completing his Ph.D. Michael took a position as a postdoctoral researcher in the National Centre for Language Technology at Dublin City University. This work researched practical machine learning solutions for sentiment analysis in social media. Michael was part of a multidisciplinary team that developed a sentiment analysis solution to predict polarity in financial blog articles. This sentiment information would then be used to focus investors to those stocks which have been referenced positively.
